M A H A R A S H T R AVisit the Bibi-ka-Maqbara, built by Aurangazeb
as a Tomb for his wife, an imitation of the Taj Mahal, a Himroo factory
where beautiful cotton and silk fabrics are produced, Panchakki - a water-
mill within which there is a Tomb of a Muslim Saint. Of special value to
the art and culture buffs are the Buddhist caves.
Ajanta Caves are 106 kms from Aurangabad and date
back to the 2nd century BC. The 30 rock hewn caves are adorned with Buddhist
sculpture and the frescoes portray in epic form the religious and secular
life through eight centuries.
Visit Kamla Nehru Park, Hanging Gardens situated
on the slopes of Malabar Hill offering a panoramic view of Marine Drive,
Chowpatty Beach, Prince of Wales Museum, Mani Bhawan, Dhobi Ghat, Gateway
of India & drive through the Crawford Market, Marine Drive & Flora
Fountain.
Aarey Milk Colony is the largest dairy farm in
Asia. From the observation pavilion you can see the process of pasteurisation
and bottling of milk. Aarey meets most of the milk needs of Bombay. Later,
visit Juhu beach with a 5 km stretch of golden beach fringed by palm trees
and a number of restaurants.
Situated 42 kms from Bombay, these caves are more
than 100 in number and built by Buddhist monks between 100 BC. and 50 AD.
at the beginning of rock-cut architecture. The Buddha is not represented
himself; only symbols of the religion are depicted. Cave nos.1, 2 and 3
are note worthy for their massive pillars, sculptures and stupas. It was
an ideal place for meditation.
112 kms from Bombay these are the largest Chaitya
(prayer) Caves in the country dating back to 160 BC. The Chaitya Hall is
45 metres long, 15 metres wide & 16 m high and is still well preserved.
At the entrance of the caves is a pillar with three lions on it. The Donor
couple and the Mithuna (in coitus) panels on pillars are famous.
SHIRDI - MAHARASHTRA (INDIA)Shirdi is the renowned abode of Saibaba. Devotees from almost every faith throng here to pay their respects to his memory. Thursday is the special day and on Ramnavmi, Guru Purnima and Dussehra, fairs are organized on a large scale. Besides the Saibaba shrine, there's the Dwarkamayi mosque and Sakori ashram.
