Beyond the Kashmir valley lies Ladakh, the land of unsurmountable mountains, fascination and monasteries. Ladakh, the abode of rare kiang and highland Yak, Leh, its capital city, lies at the tri-junction of the historic ‘Silk Route’ from Sin kiang to West Asia and to the plains of India. Situated at 3500 meters in the hills of Karakoram Range, 7 km. off the banks of Indus, Leh was visited by the Chinese traveler Fa-Aien in AD 400. It is an exotic land of rich art treasures- timeless tankas or painted scrolls; and of paintings and murals with tantric symbols; testifying a glorious civilization that once survived.
